Fraudster posing as LG’s duty officer dupes people of ₹50 lakh; arrested

Kupwara: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Kashmir has arrested a notorious fraudster involved in a high-profile case of impersonation and financial fraud.

According to a handout, the accused, Abdul Majid Mir, son of Abdul Rahim Mir of Lishtiyal, Kupwara, was apprehended in connection with FIR 10/2025 registered under relevant sections of law.

The case was initiated after a complaint alleged that Mir impersonated a Duty Officer to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and dishonestly promised government jobs and land allotments at SDA Colony, Bemina. Under this pretext, he allegedly collected over Rs 50 lakh from the complainants.

Investigations revealed that the accused had issued fake appointment letters purportedly from the Airport Authority of India and forged land allotment documents supposedly issued by the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA).

On the basis of evidence, offences under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the IPC were invoked. The accused was produced before the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, Srinagar, who granted five days’ police remand to the EOW for further investigation.

The agency urged the public to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities and reiterated its resolve to bring economic offenders to justice.
