Donald Trump and King Charles III highlighted the enduring ties between the United States and Britain during a state dinner at the White House, even as underlying differences on global issues persisted.
Speaking at the event, Trump claimed the British monarch shared his stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, saying the two were aligned on ensuring such an outcome. However, there has been no public indication that Charles has endorsed the US position on the issue, which has also drawn criticism from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In his remarks, Charles emphasised the importance of maintaining strong transatlantic relations, describing the US-UK partnership as a cornerstone of global security and prosperity. While avoiding direct reference to tensions over the Iran conflict, he underscored the need for cooperation through alliances such as NATO and reiterated support for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.
The dinner, attended by prominent figures including tech leaders and golfer Rory McIlroy, also featured lighter moments, with both leaders exchanging jokes reflecting the long history between the two nations.
Earlier, Charles addressed the US Congress — only the second British monarch to do so after Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 — where he stressed shared democratic values and called for unity among Western allies in tackling global challenges.
Despite recent strains, including Trump’s criticism of Britain’s position on Iran, both sides struck a conciliatory tone, reaffirming what Trump described as one of America’s closest and most enduring alliances.
The royal visit continues with a stop in New York before concluding later this week.
