Israel launches fresh strikes on Lebanon despite renewed criticism from Trump

Strikes in Lebanon.

Israeli forces have reportedly launched fresh airstrikes in southern Lebanon, despite renewed criticism from US President Donald Trump regarding Israel’s military actions there, according to the BBC.

On Wednesday, Lebanese state news agency NNA reported that Israeli warplanes targeted the Nabatieh al-Fawqa region and areas surrounding the nearby town of Kfar Tebnit. The Israeli military has not commented on the strikes, although it has previously stated that its operations are aimed at the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

While the details of the US-Iran agreement intended to end the conflict have not been made public, Pakistan, which helped mediate the deal, has indicated that Lebanon is included in its provisions.

Speaking on Tuesday, Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should act “more responsibly with respect to Lebanon.” At the G7 summit in France, Trump also remarked that Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah had continued for too long and was resulting in excessive loss of life, as reported by BBC.

Since the US-Iran agreement was announced on Sunday night, both Israel and Hezbollah have continued exchanging attacks. Earlier that day, an Israeli strike on Beirut, carried out in response to a Hezbollah rocket attack across the border, complicated efforts to finalise the agreement.

Trump told G7 leaders that although he maintained a strong relationship with Netanyahu, he believed a recent Israeli attack had gone too far. He stated, “I didn’t like that he did an attack… that was too much.”

Trump also emphasised US support for Israel, saying, “Without the United States, there would be no Israel. Without me, there would be no Israel because no other president was willing to do what I did.”

Meanwhile, Netanyahu said on Monday that Israeli troops would remain in Lebanon for as long as necessary.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, warned that any future Israeli attacks on Lebanon or the continued presence of Israeli forces on Lebanese territory would be considered a breach of the interim agreement reached with the United States.
