A pilot was killed and a co-pilot was seriously injured Thursday after a small training aircraft crashed in a field near the Ganga Barrage in Kanpur, northern India, the Hindustan Times reported.
The twin-engine training aircraft went down near Natthupurwa village, close to the Ganga Barrage. Emergency services reached the crash site and began rescue operations.
The pilot died in the crash, while the co-pilot was taken for medical treatment with serious injuries, officials said.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Authorities are expected to begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The crash comes after a series of recent incidents involving training aircraft in Uttar Pradesh. In June 2026, a trainee pilot was seriously injured after being struck by the rotating propeller of a twin-engine training aircraft at Kanpur’s Chakeri Airport. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation ordered an investigation and grounded the aircraft involved.
Details about the aircraft operator, the identities of those involved and whether anyone else was on board were not immediately available.
Officials plan to release more information as investigators examine the wreckage.
