Japanese authorities issued a Level 4 heavy rain warning for Sapporo on Monday as torrential rain raised the risk of flooding, while 51 train services were cancelled across Hokkaido.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the warning for Sapporo as a low-pressure system and front brought intense rainfall to the region. Level 4 is a warning level used as a guide for local authorities to issue evacuation instructions, TV Asahi reported.
JR Hokkaido said 51 services, including 21 Rapid Airport trains linking Sapporo with New Chitose Airport, had been cancelled as of 3:25 p.m. local time. Two limited express services and 28 local trains were also affected, according to local broadcaster HTB.
Local authorities warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers and landslides. Reports from Sapporo said some roads and homes were affected by flooding as heavy rain continued.
Weather News said strong winds and thunderstorms were also possible, with severe weather expected to continue into Tuesday morning.
