Srinagar: A joint military operation is in progress in several parts of Anantnag district which lies in the south of Kashmir.

A joint team of Indian Army’s first Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and SOG of Jammu and Kashmir Police have laid cordon and search in several villages.

The cordon has been laid in the villages of Baghpora, Magraypora and Marhama in Anantnag after information of a few militants present in the area was received.

The search operation is currently going on.

Last late evening, the joint party of Army, para-military CRPF and J&K police launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Kakpora area of Pulwama district during which three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants died.

Among the slain militants was Ab Majid Dar who was allegedly involved in a number of killings including that of the sarpanch of Kakapora and the district president of Pulwama.

A police official said that the encounter started in Kakapora area of Pulwama following intelligence input stating that three local boys had joined the militant ranks in LeT militant outfit.

The Pulwama region is believed to have a large presence of local militants aided with a strong network of over ground workers, the police official said while adding that it was the first “successful” counter-insurgency operation in the area.

On Wednesday, two Hizb ul Mujahideen militants died fighting forces in Pazalpora area of Sopore in Baramulla. On June 16, three other LeT militants including a commander, Junaid Ahmad Mattoo, died fighting the armed forces in Arwani area of Kulgam district.
