Indian Army major, soldier killed in a militant attack in Shopian

Srinagar: Two army men of the Indian Armed Forces, including an officer, were killed while another soldier was injured after militants ambushed an army patrol party in Shopian district of south Kashmir early Thursday.

An Army Major and a soldier were killed and another were injured in a gunfight between government forces and militants in Zaipora, Matribugh village of Shopian district in south Kashmir on Thursday.

An official, according to a report in Greater Kashmir, a daily newspaper based in Srinagar, said that militants attacked an army patrol party in Zaipora village early today.

An army Major and two soldiers were injured in the attack, he said. They were airlifted to Srinagar army hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. The deceased have been identified as Major Kamlesh Panday and soldier Tenzin.

One more injured soldier was being treated in the army hospital at Badamibagh. He has been identified as Kripal Singh.

The injured were airlifted to 92 base hospital in Srinagar for treatment where Major and another soldier succumbed.

Three militants are believed to be holed up in a building in the area, reports said.

The operation, which is currently underway, began after the forces received intelligence inputs about the presence of the militants in the area.
