48 percent increase in face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops in 2017: Report

New Delhi: The number of face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has shot up by 48 percent, reported the Indian Express.

The report also said that there was a significant increase in the number of ‘Chinese transgressions’ into the Indian side in 2017.

The year also saw the Indian and Chinese armies involved in 73-day face-off in Doklam on the Sikkim-Bhutan border.

There are 23 major areas of dispute on the LAC identified by the Indian side, where most Chinese transgressions take place and faceoffs occur. These include Demchok, Chumar, Pangong Tso and Spanggur Gap in Ladakh, Kaurik in Himachal Pradesh, Barahoti in Uttarakhand, and Namkha Chu, Sumdorong Chu, Asaphila and Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh.

Quoting official data, the report said that there were 415 transgressions by the Chinese soldiers into the Indian side in 2017 as compared to 271 in 2016.

Also, in 2016, the military patrols of both countries came face to face 146 times in 2016 however, the number of patrols face-offs shot up to 216 in 2017.
