Indonesian President Joko Widodo has arrived at the Presidential Palace where he was met by President Ashraf Ghani early Monday early afternoon. Widodo arrived earlier in the day at Hamid Karzai International Airport after ending a two-day visit to Bangladesh.

This is the first state visit of an Indonesian president to Afghanistan since that of former President Soekarno in 1961.

Kabul based TOLO News reported that Widodo wrapped up a two-day state visit on Monday to Bangladesh where he sought stronger ties with the south Asian country. He had also extended support for the Rohingyas in the country.

During his state visit to Bangladesh he signed at least five instruments, including two memorandums of understanding (MoUs), aiming to enhance bilateral relations, trade and investment, and boosting cooperation in different sectors between the two countries.

Widodo arrived here at ARG on Monday morning and was received by President Ashraf Ghani. This is Widodo’s first visit and he was accompanied by his wife. Ghani and Widodo are expected to discuss a wide range of issues. The two presidents will also hold a joint press conference after the talks.

During his trip to Islamabad two days ago, Widodo told President Mamnoon Hussain that his country could play a key role in the Afghan peace process.

He suggested the formation of a committee of religious scholars from Indonesia, Pakistan and Afghanistan to promote peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
