Live Updating: Pakistani militant escapes police custody after shootout in SMHS hospital

Srinagar: Naveed, a Pakistani militant escaped police custody on Tuesday after a shootout at SMHS Hospital. He was brought to the hospital for a medical check up.

A senior police official said that Naveed, snatched a weapon from policemen accompanying him and opened fire. “One policeman has died, while another is injured,” he said.

The cops also mentioned that Naveed still has the snatched weapon. Police are investigating reports that he was helped by accomplices who were already positioned inside the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital as he was brought there by a police party from the Rainawari central jail along with five other prisoners on Tuesday morning.

The area has been cordoned off and an alert has been sounded. A massive man hunt has been launched to nab the militant.

Injured cop succumbs taking toll to two  

A cop who was injured in the shootout at SMHS hospital has succumbed to his injuries taking the death toll to two. The cop, identified as Babar Ahmad of Bradi Shangus Anantnag, was injured in the attack. Earlier Mushtaq Ahmed, a constable had died during the shootout.

Escaped militant was close to LeT chief: Police 

Police has said that the escaped militant Naveed alias Abu Hanzullah, a resident of Sahiwala, Multan Punjab Pakistan was LeT’s deputy chief at the time of his arrest. They also added that he was close to the Lashkar chief Abu Qasim.

12:14 pm: Srinagar has been put on high alert following the escape of the foreign militant. All the exit and entry points towards the hospital have been sealed.
