Social media gag for govt employees: In a first, Jammu doctor sacked over Facebook post

Jammu: The state government, in a first, has terminated the services of a govt employee for an ‘anti-government’ post on Facebook.

The Registrar of the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, Amit Kumar was sacked after he violated the order that prevents government employees from using their ‘personal social media accounts for any political activity or endorse the posts or tweets or blogs of any political figure.’

According to an order issued by the General Administration Department, “No government employee shall engage in any criminal, dishonest, immoral or notoriously disgraceful conduct on social media which may be prejudicial to the government.”

Principal GMC Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina confirmed the termination of the doctor. “We have initiated action as per the rules. The doctor has been asked to explain his position,” she told Greater Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik had termed the social media gag order issued by the government for its employees as “dictatorial”.

“Dictatorial order suppressing use of social media by government employees resembles to that of North Korean dictatorship,” said Malik, in a statement.

“Fraud politicians who once used to make hue and cry on human rights violations and propagated healing touch and battle of ideas by their undemocratic diktats have turned Kashmir into a military dictatorship where every voice of dissent is being suppressed by military might,” he said.
