LoC violations: Five family members killed as India, Pakistan trade heavy fire in Poonch

Srinagar: The Indian and Pakistani armies on Sunday exchanged heavy fire along the Line of Control in the Mendhar area of Poonch in which five members of a family have been killed.

Two others are said to be critical.

Reports said that shelling began around 7:40 am on in Balakote sector of Mendhar.

Jammu and Kashmir Directorate General of Police SP Vaid told ANI, “Due to shelling from across in Balakote sector of Poonch, five civilians lost their lives. Two others, who were injured, have been shifted to the hospital.” The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Ramzan, Malka Bi, Faizan, Rizwan and Mehreen.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in a tweet expressed her anguish and condolences to the family.

Earlier, also in Uri, India and Pakistan used heavy artillery against each other. The escalations went to a point that the administration in Uri had to evacuate people and declare an ’emergency’.

According to reports, Pakistan Army, using public address systems asked the people living near the LoC in Uri to move to safer places. 

In that face off between the two nations, heavy artillery was used, however the Indian Army chose to ‘downplay’ the escalation and called it a ‘local phenomenon’.
