Srinagar: The family of human rights activist Salman Yousuf from North Kashmir’s Bandipora district has expressed serious concern over his deteriorating health. Yousu has been in since more than a year now.

Salman Yousuf, according to his wife Zamrooda, has been languishing in jail from the past 18 months under the draconian Public Safety Act.

“My husband is a human rights campaigner as well as the Coordinator of Institute of Human Rights Studies. He was arrested in September 2016 after Kashmir witnessed popular people’s agitation. Since then he has been sent to at least five jails including Kathua and Kotbhalwal,” Zamrooda said.

She said a couple of days back authorities at Srinagar Central Jail informed her that Yousuf has been shifted to Bandipora Police Station. “We have been living from hand to mouth as he was the sole bread earner,” she said.

While seeking intervention of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, she requested authorities to release her husband.

Zamrooda said that Jammu Kashmir High Court quashed his detention order but instead of releasing him, Police once again slapped PSA on him and shifted him to jail.

Pertinently, Salman Yousuf is a researcher who worked on the JKCCS Human Rights document titled Structure of Violence.
