Srinagar: Army on Friday claimed to have killed three militants in a gunfight in Vilgam tehsil of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Quoting an unnamed army official, GNS news agency reported that the soldiers of 15 RR intercepted a group of militants in Brinjal forest adjacent to Shahnagar Jat Gali, around seven kilometres from Tehsil headquarter Vilgam.
“The group of militants opened fire, which was retaliated by the troops triggering off a gunfight. The militants fired indiscriminately and in the gunfight three militants were killed,” he said.
“We are ascertaining their outfit affiliation,” the official said, adding the operation is still going on.
The operation took place even as the Home Ministry has asked the forces to halt anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the month of Ramzan.
