No mercy for terrorists, OGWs would be dealt through legal means, says Madhav after fallout with PDP

Shujat Bukhaari’s assassination was the last straw

BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav spoke to Times of India a day after the collapse of the PDP-BJP alliance, stating that they would not show any ‘mercy’ to terrorists.

Madhav, in the interview described a four step process while dealing with terrorism in the state:

  1. Over Ground Workers (OGWs) would be dealt through legal means.
  2. All stakeholders of the state, including the Hurriyat, would be engaged with.
  3. No mercy policy would be applied to terrorists, and
  4. Promoting development.

He also criticized his former coalition partner PDP for failing to live upto their promise and conceding to “domestic political compulsion”.

Amid rumors of no dialogue between the JRL and the GoI, Madhav said that they were ‘ready’ for talks, citing that the Rising Kashmir editor’s assassination had been the last straw for the coalition which led to its breakup. He also added that his party would not contest for early polls in the state following the immediate effect of Governor’s rule in the now government-less state.

Shujaat Bukhari was assassinated on June 14 a few minutes before Iftar, in Press Enclave, Srinagar by three unidentified gunmen. In protest of his assassination, noted leading newspapers editorials went blank and journalists held a silent march on Monday in Press Enclave.

The PDP-BJP alliance collapsed on Monday following the assassination, with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti submitting her resignation a few hours later and Governor’s rule being imposed in the state with immediate approval from the President.
