Congress core holds meeting amidst reports of PDP approaching them for government formation

The Congress’ core group on Jammu and Kashmir met today to discuss the political situation in the state, according to news agency PTI.

The meeting was held at the residence of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who heads the group.

The group also includes senior Congress leaders Karan Singh, P Chidambaram, Congress general secretary in charge of the state Ambika Soni and Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir.

The party was to hold a meeting of its legislators in the state in Srinagar this week and discuss the way forward, sources said.

The Congress is in a ‘wait and watch’ mode in the state, which is under Governor’s Rule after the BJP pulled out of its alliance with the PDP.

There are reports of the PDP approaching the Congress for government formation in the state.

However, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has ruled out that the party will form a government with the PDP, reported PTI.

“There is no question, for now or in the future, of forging an alliance with the PDP,” he said, denying having met any PDP leader.

Earlier, when former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had arrived in Delhi on Friday night, rumors had spread that there were talks of a new alliance.

The leader has called for a meeting in Kashmir today for discussing future strategies of Congress in the state followed by a two day conclave in Srinagar which will be attended by party leaders from all the three regions — Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir.

Earlier, a sedition complaint had been filed against senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifuddin Soz in a Delhi court for their remarks ‘against the Indian Army’.
