Kashmir shuts against militants, civilian killings on JRL’s call

Srinagar: After the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) called for a shutdown on Monday following the killings of civlian, militants in Kulgam district of South Kashmir, normal life halted to a stop.

Witnesses said that all shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in city centre and other parts of summer capital Srinagar.  All shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in Banihal town of Ramban district while public transport was off the roads.

Overall, the valley saw scarce traffic on the streets along with minimal attendance in government offices.

Meanwhile, train service remained suspended for the third consecutive day following an advisory.

Earlier, a 24-year-old youth was killed after forces fired live ammunition and pellets to break up a protest near the site of a gunfight in Chowgam area of Qazigund earlier today that left five militants dead. At least 20 protesters were injured in the clashes.

In protest against the killings of five militants and a civilian in Kulgam, the Joint  Resistance Leadership has called for a shutdown on Monday.

JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik appealed for a shutdown on Monday against the killings and “unabated use of force on people.”
