Municipal Polls: JRL calls for shutdown on October 8

Srinagar: In wake of the Municipal and Panchayat polls, the Joint Resistance Leadership has called for a shutdown in Kashmir on October 8.

“JRL leaders asked people to observe complete shutdown across Jammu and Kashmir on 8th October to protest the commencement of the ULB and Panchayat election drama being foisted upon them,” said a JRL statement.

“The leadership asked people to observe subsequent protest shutdown in their own respective areas as per the poll schedule on 10th, 13th and 16th October 2018 respectively and show their complete disassociation and resentment against it.”

JRL leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also condemned the “arbitrary arrest of JKLF chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik by the authorities ruling J&K and the arrest of dozens of Hurriyat activists and youth and raids on their homes.”

“Those in power should by now realise that incarcerations intimidation and fear is neither a deterrent for leadership nor for people not to pursue their struggle for self determination,” they said.

Meanwhile, no nomination papers have been filed by any candidate for 177 municipal wards out of a total 624 in the Kashmir, while upto 215 wards will return their representative unopposed, IANS reported.
