Seeks details of CRPF men for examination; pledges to complete investigations soon
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police have lodged an FIR into the killing of Abdul Hameed Ganai, a resident of Preng, Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir who was dubbed as a militant and during the course of investigations; it was later proved that Ganai was a civilian.
The police have also sought details of CRPF officials, who are now retired, for examination and corroborating the other evidence to prove Ganai’s custodial killing.
Police has stated this in its fresh reply submitted before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in response to the petition filed by Chairman International Forum for Justice and Human Rights (IFJHR) Muhammad Ahsan Untoo in 2013 in case number SHRC/96/KGN/2013. The Police had constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the killing and it was later found that the slain Ganai was a civilian killed during custody, the petitioner said.
According to the police reply filed before the commission, it is submitted that the report has been sought from concerned SHO which reveals that the police station Kangan receive a letter from DPO Ganderbal along with enclosures of assistance superintendent of police for lodgment of FIR into the custodial killing of one Abdul Hameed Ganai of Preng Kangan, Ganderbal and accordingly case FIR no 31, 2018 under section 364/302 RPC was registered in police station Kangan and investigation taken up.
The reply reads that the correspondence has been made with the 65 bn CRPF E Coy seeking particulars of some officials who have proceeded on voluntary retirements and who are examined regarding the alleged incident. “The report regarding character and antecedents of the deceased regarding his involved or otherwise with militant organisations is yet awaited. The investigations of the case will be brought to the final conclusion soon,” the police reply reads.
Petitioner while expressing his satisfaction over the lodging of FIR said that it’s better late than never. “I am hopeful that those security personnel who killed innocent Ganai in custody are brought to the justice. I hope justice is delivered to the Ganai’s family,” he said.
