‘Valley of Tears’: Belgian photographer Cedric Gerbehaye’s exhibition highlights human rights violations in Kashmir

Srinagar: Pakistan-administered Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider inaugurated a photograph exhibition by Belgian photographer and journalist Cedric Gerbehaye on the human rights violations in Indian administered Kashmir.

The photo series, published by doc! magazine and MAPS images shows Kashmiris under conflict.

The exhibition is part of the 11th Kashmir – EU Week taking place in Brussels from November 5 to 8 and will continue at the Press Club Brussels, Europe for two weeks.

In the category, ‘Tearsheets’, these images have been taken by Belgian photographer and journalist Cedriv Gerbehaye.

Photographs by Gerbehaye also featured in National Geographic magazine in June earlier this year along with a story on Kashmir by Rania Abouzeid.

His photographs depict the misery of youngsters, women and old people in Kashmir as well as the blatant misuse of force by the Indian armed forces.

The intense anger against India which is growing, especially among the youth, due to suppression and the brutal use of force by Indian armed forces are particularly highlighted by Gerbehaye. A parallel exhibition of his photographs will also take place in European Parliament Strasbourg from 13th November.

Gerbehaye visited Kashmir in the wake of a new wave of protests by the people of Kashmir and brutal use of force by the Indian army after the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani in July 2016. The use of pellet guns by Indian armed forces firing lead sharpnels resulted in the death and partial or total blindness of many demonstrators.

Along with his two associates, Wani was killed in Bamdoora area of Kokernag on July 8, 2016. His killing brought entire Kashmir to a standstill.

The Kashmir – EU Week 2018 is being organized by the Kashmir Council – EU and hosted by MEPs Wajid Khan and Sajjad Karim.
