Govt provides Rs 1 lakh compensation to family of infant hit by pellet in Shopian clashes

Srinagar: The deputy commissioner of Shopian provided Rs one lakh to the family of 18-month-old Hiba Nisar who had been hit by pellets fired by armed forces in her native village on November 25.

Quoting district administration Shopian, an official spokesman said: “The 18-month-old girl child’s eye got accidentally injured on 25 November 2018 in a pellet-firing incident. DC assured Hiba’s parents that the government would provide the baby girl with all kind of support possible for her early recovery.”

Hiba had suffered extensive damage due to the injury at their native village in Kapren-Batgund area in Shopian district, after the gunfight when clashes had erupted following the killing of six militants.

Quoting the victim’s mother, Indian Express had reported that while clashes were going on in the area, the armed forces had fired pellets. She said she had been trying to move out of the house as intense tear gas shelling had caused breathing problems. She had been holding Hiba in her arms when the pellets were fired, the report had stated.

K Vijay Kumar, security advisor to the Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik had stated a few days later that an inquiry had been ordered into the incident.

According to the IE report, The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had also sought a detailed report from the JK police and the administration in the matter.
