Kartapur in Pakistan today due to then Congress leaders’ ‘lack of vision, sensitivity’, says Modi

They had no idea about the importance of Guru Nanak Dev and had no respect for Sikh sentiments, he said.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Tuesday, while addressing an election rally in Rajasthan ahead of the December 7 elections, said that Kartarpur went to Pakistan due to the ‘lack of vision and sensitivity’ of then Congress leaders, PTI reported.

“Kartarpur is in Pakistan today because then Congress leaders had no idea about the importance of Guru Nanak Dev and had no respect for Sikh sentiments,” he said, as per the report. “The credit of the Kartarpur corridor goes to your vote. Correcting Congress mistakes was my destiny.”

“The headlines five years ago were about corruption and scams,” Modi said, as quoted in the report. “Have you seen any news of this kind in the last five years?”

In the report, focusing on farmers and their problems, he said his government wants to make farmers “energy givers” and asked them to install solar panels, use drip irrigation and other modern methods of farming.

“The naamdar does not know the difference between red and green chillies,” he said, hitting out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who he has often referred to as “naamdar” (dynast), the report stated.

“If you tell him that farmers are getting high prices for red chilli as compared to green chilli, he’ll say farmers should grown red chillies,” he said, alleging that the Congress was responsible for the pain of farmers, as per PTI.

The Kartarpur Corridor, which will facilitate the visa-free travel of members of India’s Sikh community to their religious site in Pakistan, was inaugurated both in India and Pakistan within a time gap of two days and is expected to be completed within six months.

Earlier, the Union Cabinet headed by PM Narendra Modi announced building the Kartarpur road corridor up to the international border between India and Pakistan to let Sikh pilgrims visit the gurdwara on the banks of the river Ravi in Pakistan.

Both Pakistan and India made the decision to allow the pilgrims visit the holy shrine without having to secure a visa.

The foundation stone in Gurdaspur was laid by Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu in the presence of the CM and Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday.

The Government of Pakistan had also said that it would provide land to Sikh organisations for construction of modern hotels in Kartarpur, Nankana Sahib and Narowal, besides construction of a railway station in Kartarpur to provide state-of-the-art board and lodging facilities to Sikh pilgrims visiting Pakistan.
