Telegraph’s headline calling out the hypocrisy around Sabrimala protests goes viral in Kashmir

Srinagar: A story about protests in Kerala regarding the Sabarimala temple row is going viral in Kashmir. It is not the story which is catching the eye but the headline.

The Telegraph newspaper, published from eastern state of Poschim Banga in their headline, compared the state’s response towards protesters in Kashmir and Kerala.

The headline said, “In Kashmir, we shoot them. In Kerala, we call them devotees.

Kerala is on boil since the Supreme Court of India ruled last year ruled that women devotees can visit Sabrimala temple in the state.

The very first paragraph of the story attacked the Right-wingers for their hooliganism and trying to enfore a shutdown in the state.

“Raw hooliganism aimed at subverting the law and blackmailing the judicial process erupted in several places in Kerala on Thursday in the name of a Sangh parivar-sponsored shutdown to protest the entry of two women of childbearing age into the Sabarimala temple,” began the report.

The protest and the resultant clashes led to at least one death and widespread destruction of property. At one point, the potential of the protest to threaten the social fabric of the progressive state was also on display, the story further added.

Netizens in Kashmir widely shared the story on social media.

Award winning investigative journalist Rana Ayyub while sharing the post called the headline ‘scathing’.

Besides people in Kashmir, the story was shared by prominent journalists and politicians in Kashmir as a well as outside.

Former Chief Minister of JK, Omar Abdullah also retweeted the tweet below:
