Former law minister of Nepal, Nilambar Acharya has been appointed as an ambassador to India, a post that was vacant for over a year following Deep Kumar Upadhyay’s resignation ahead of parliamentary elections.

For filling the post, the Nepalese government has been searching for ‘a candidate with democratic credentials who is well versed on Nepal-India relations and international affairs while being supportive of the communist administration’.

Nepal’s President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Sunday administered oath of office to Acharya at Rastrapati Bhawan at Sheetal Niwas, under a new provision. He is the first to do so.

Earlier, ambassadors were administered oath of office by Supreme Court Chief Justice.

Bhandari congratulated Acharya for being an ambassador to a very close neighbor of Nepal.

Acharya was an interim minister after the political change of 1990. He later became the ambassador to Sri Lanka. He was nominated to the first Constituent Assembly elected in 2008 and went on to head its constitutional committee.

Earlier, The Kathmandu Post reported that the government had proposed his name to be nominated.
