Srinagar: Family members of the inmates of the Central Jail, Srinagar held a protest on Tuesday claiming that the jail was not safe for the prisoners.
During a protest at the Press Colony of Srinagar, the families of inmates demanded that the jail should not be turned into ‘Guantanamo’.
Recently, violent protests broke out inside the high security central jail in Srinagar reportedly over some construction work at a barrack. Meanwhile Press Trust of India had reported that riots broke out after rumours started floating that some inmates were being shifted out of the Kashmir valley.
In the aftermath of the violence, restrictions were put in place in the Old City and Mirwaiz was put under house arrest.
Reacting over the protest by the families of the inmates, PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti said that GoI wants to convert actual jails into Guantanamo.
Prisoners are entitled to fundamental human rights & using brute force to quell protests is a clear violation. Pertinent to mention that inmates protested after alleged desecration of Quran. GoI wants to turn Kashmir into an open air prison & convert actual jails into Guantanamo https://t.co/d5iweHQMjg
