Tension between India, China mounts as both enhance military presence in Galwan Valley, Pangong

The development comes weeks after commanders of both armies came to blows in the region

Indian and Chinese armies rushed in troops in areas around Pangong Tso lake and Galwan Valley in Ladakh. The move signals aggressive posturing two weeks after the armies were engaged in a fierce face-off, PTI reported quoting military sources.

India’s top military brass is reportedly monitoring the situation even as the US said the aggressive behaviour by Chinese troops was a reminder of the threat posed by China.

Two rounds of talks between local military commanders at Pangong Tso, where troops of the two sides came to blows two weeks ago, have remained inconclusive, and Beijing has warned of “necessary counter-measures”.

It claimed the Indian Army had “entered Chinese soil on the Baijing and Lujin duan section of the Sino-Indian border, obstructing the normal patrol of Chinese border troops, and was “attempting to unilaterally change the status quo of border territory”.

While the Army and Ministry of External Affairs maintained silence, officials in New Delhi described the situation as “delicately poised” and “very sensitive” at a time when the country is grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic and its fallout.
