Nepalese forces open fire on Indo-Nepal border, 1 Indian civilian killed, 4 injured amid tensions with India

One Indian has also been detained by Nepalese forces.

Following the killing, the situation at the border is tense.

At least one Indian was killed and four others were injured after Nepal police allegedly fired indiscriminately on them at the border near Sitamarhi district in Bihar on Friday, officials said.

Sources said the firing took place after a clash between the Indians and personnel of Nepal police at the Lalbandi-Janki Nagar border in Pipra Parsain panchayat under Sonebarsha police station of the district.

The Seema Suraksha Bal IG of Bihar confirmed the incident and said that, “one dead, two injured in firing in Sitamarhi near India-Nepal border.”

As per the local media reports, the man was working on the farm when Nepal police suddenly fired shots.

“One person has been detained by Nepali security personnel and we’re in talks with them so that they release him and matters don’t escalate. Everything happened in Nepal, not on the Indian side, DG SSB Kumar Rajesh Chandra told ANI.

Following the shooting, the situation at the border is tense. Currently, both the Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) and the local police Lalbandi are positioned at the border while the Nepal army is camping on the Narayanpur border.

On May 8, India’s defence minister virtually inaugurated a new 80 km-long road in the Himalayas, connecting to the border with China, at the Lipulekh pass.

The Nepali government protested immediately, contending that the road crosses territory that it claims and accusing India of changing the status quo without diplomatic consultations.

Among the many escalatory moves since then, Nepal deployed police forces to the region, summoned the Indian ambassador in Kathmandu, and initiated a constitutional amendment to formalise and extend its territorial claims over approximately 400 sq km.

India, on the other hand, has conveyed its openness to a dialogue but does not seem to share Nepal’s sense of urgency: its initial statement agreed to a dialogue, but only after the COVID-19 crisis.
