In a single day, 14,516 fresh infections were reported throughout India. This is the highest rise in the new cases being reported in a single day. The tally of the total people testing positive for the virus has reached 4 lakh mark.

The death toll stands at 12,948 with 375 deaths being recorded in the last 24 hours.

However, the recovered patients constitute 54 percent. There are 1,68,269 active cases and 2,13,831 people have recovered from the fatal virus.

The national capital Delhi registered 3,137 fresh infections which takes the toll tally to 53,116 and the death toll to 2,035.

Tamil Nadu toll tally stands at 54,449 and 666 deaths with 2,115 cases being reported in the last 24 hours.

The scientists have been trying to decipher the origin of the virus and as per a report by The Hindu, traces of the virus have been found in wastewater collected from Milan and Turin in Italy in December 2019 which hints at the presence and circulation of the virus in Northern Italy before China reported its first cases.
