India records 64,531 fresh COVID cases, tally mounts to 27,67,274

Srinagar: In the last 24 hours, India reported 64,531 new cases of novel Coronavirus and 1,092 deaths. India’s tally of 27,67,274 cases includes 6,76,514 patients undergoing treatment, 20,37,871 patients who have recovered and 52,889 deaths.

Maharashtra, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are the states with the highest number of cases in the country.

Meanwhile, Phase 3 trials of the Oxford vaccine will begin in India this week, according to reports.

The Oxford University vaccine candidate, Covishield, could be the first one to move into production in India.

The World Health Organisation has said nations that hoard possible vaccines while excluding others will deepen the pandemic. The health body also added that the planet is nowhere near the amount of coronavirus immunity needed to induce herd immunity.

It has warned the world governments against “vaccine nationalism” and urged leaders to make plans on how to share life-saving inoculations against coronavirus.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the threat of COVID can only be snuffed out with global coordination, especially when a vaccine is developed.
