China condoles Pranab Mukherjee’s demise, terms his death ‘heavy loss for India-China friendship’

Srinagar: A day after the demise of a former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, China has condoled his death saying that he was the “veteran statesman” of India and his death is a “heavy loss for India-China friendship.”

“Former President Mukherjee was a veteran statesman of India. In his 50 years in politics, he made positive contributions to China-India relations,” a report published by a Delhi based news agency PTI, quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying as saying during her daily media briefing.

In 2014, when two countries had a meeting following the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India, the spokesman said a joint statement by India and china in presence of Mukherjee, was given focusing on “building closer development partnership.”

“It is a heavy loss for China-India friendship and to India. We express deep condolences over his passing and extend sincere sympathies to the Indian government and his family,” Hua said.

Mukherjee, who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 until 2017, died after he suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday evening in a hospital in Delhi following a 21-day battle with multiple ailments.
