West Bengal: The National Investigative Agency (NIA) has claimed to have arrested a Madrassa teacher from West Bengal for his alleged “Al-Qaida” link.
The accused identified as Abdul Momin Mondal, 32, is a resident of Murshidabad in West Bengal and has been placed under arrest in connection with the “Al-Qaeda case of West Bengal and Kerala”.
He is the ninth person to be held from Bengal in connection with the case, the statement by NIA said.
According to a report published in India Today, the investigation agency had lodged a case on September 11, 2020, against the accused involved in alleged “anti-national activities” by a group of militants consisting of more than 10 members.
Quoting officials, the report said that militants were allegedly inspired by militant organisation Al-Qaeda, who were allegedly planning to carry out anti-national activities at different locations in India including but not limited to West Bengal, Delhi and Kerala.
“Investigation revealed that accused Abdul Momin Mondal was working as a teacher in Raipur Darur Huda Islamia Madrassa in Murshidabad District, West Bengal and was found to be involved in a series of conspiratorial meetings convened by the members of the Al-Qaeda module. He was also trying to recruit new members for the group and was raising funds for furthering its terrorist activities,” said a statement by NIA.
The NIA claimed that it has seized digital devices and other articles after searching the residential premises of Mondal on Sunday.
So far, 11 accused have been arrested by the NIA in this case- 8 persons from West Bengal and 3 others from Kerala for suspected links to the module. Accused Abdul Momin Mondal was produced before the District Court in Murshidabad today and transit remand for transporting him to New Delhi has been granted, the statement mentioned.
