Bird flu confirmed in Delhi after dead crows, ducks found positive for avian flu

New Delhi: Delhi on Monday confirmed bird flu cases after samples from the dead crows and ducks were found positive for the avian flu in tests at a Bhopal-based laboratory.

“All eight samples — four from a park in Mayur Vihar Phase 3, three from Sanjay Lake and one from Dwarka — have been found positive for avian influenza,” a report by Times of India quoted Rakesh Singh from the animal husbandry unit of the Development Department as saying.

A few samples were also sent to a lab in Jalandhar and their results are awaited, Singh was quoted further saying.

On Sunday, 17 more ducks were found dead at Sanjay Lake, prompting the authorities to declare it an “alert zone”.

Pertinently, Delhi has become ninth state in the country where samples have tested positive for avian flu so far.

Earlier, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had closed the water bodycum-park following the death of 10 ducks on the premises.

Apart from the ducks, the report quoting a DDA official said: “91 crows have been found dead in 14 DDA parks in the last few days”.

Three other recreational parks in Delhi — Hauz Khas Park, Dwarka Sector 9 Park, Hastsal Park — were also closed on Saturday.

While at least 24 crows have been found dead at a district park in south Delhi’s Jasola over the past few days, Hauz Khas Park, Dwarka Sector 9 Park and Hastsal Park have been closed as a precautionary measure, according to officials.
