Students in lurch after KU sets ‘out of syllabus’ paper, fails students after promising ‘grace marks’

Srinagar: Hundreds of undergraduate students pursuing arts stream from various degree college are staring at bleak future as Kashmir University has refused to hold re-examination of one of the papers that was allegedly out of syllabus.

On January 28, hundreds of 6th semester undergraduate students were left in lurch after ‘none of the question in the Tourism Ecology paper were from syllabus’.

Students of Degree College Magam, Tagmarg, Amar Singh College, Anantnag College, and Pulwama College had protested, demanding re-examination against the discrepancy after which they were assured by the officials that they will be ‘given grace marks in this paper’.

However, the students were shell shocked when they reviewed their revaluation status on the internet which revealed that almost everyone is failing in the subject.

Irfan Ahmad one of the students of Magam Degree College said, “not even one question in the paper was from syllabus. We were confused in the examination hall but teachers forced us to write the paper. Later Tangmarg College students and our college students collectively staged a protest demanding re-examination.”

He said that the students have also submitted representation to the Kashmir University urging them to hold re-examination of this paper but instead the officials said that grace marks will be given to this paper.

“Four days ago we checked the revaluation status on internet and were dumbstruck when we saw everyone was failing in this subject. This is injustice with students. Kashmir University is ruining career of the hundreds of students,” he added.

He added that papers of sociology and sericulture were also set out of syllabus and the university conducted re-examination of both the subjects but university is dragging its feet from conducting re-exam of Tourism Ecology subject.

One of the University official said on the condition of anonymity that varsity has done such incidence many times in the past and continues to do it. “The professors who are assigned to set question paper are not taking the task seriously. They set the papers randomly due to which students usually complain.”

He said that professors get handsome money for setting the papers but the take this job casually which results in re-examination and which in turn leads to late completion of degrees.

Speaking to Free Press Kashmir Dean Academic Affairs, Kashmir University, Professor Shabir Ahamd Bhat said that he is not updated on it as of now, however he said he will take the matter with the controller examination.

“We will discuss the issues and see what has happened and what should be done,” Professor Shabir said.
