In yet another incident of lynching in Jammu division, at least two men of the Muslim Gujjar community were allegedly attacked, ruthlessly beaten and harassed by ‘goons’ on Thursday.
On May 6, at around 9 in the night, Mohammad Sidique along with his cousin brother Mir Hussain were coming home in Gharota district of Jammu from the day’s hard work along with their two oxen.
“As the month of Ramzan is going on, both of us were fasting. We had a very busy day working in the fields so we decided to go home after Iftar (the meal consumed to break the fast). Also we had purchased two oxen which is why we were returning home late,” said Sidique.
They were just half kilometer away from their home when they were stopped by a group of around six people who were carrying knives and wooden canes.
“As I began to pass their way, suddenly I felt a heavy blow on my head, the space around me started blurring and I felt down. Blood was oozing from my head and within a few minutes my face, neck and my clothes were drenched in blood. I could not understand what was happening. I felt unconscious,” recalled Sidique.
They did not leave Hussain, Sidique’s cousin unhurt, they beat him black and blue and both of them were taken to the hospital after the police came on the spot.
A video which was shared on social media, shows the goons forcing Sidique to hold a knife in his hand.
Sidique said that they used ‘racial slurs’ against them and abused them on the basis of their religion.
“I could not tell you what kind of words they used. I don’t know if my oxen are safe. When I opened my eyes I was in the hospital and I had 17 stitches on my head and we are still in the hospital. There are bruises all over my back. Hussain is not able to move. All his muscles are broken,” Sidique lamented.
Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu, Chandan Kohli said that they have arrested five people in this case and the investigation is going on.
“We have registered a strong case against these people under stringent sections of law. Sections under IPC 307, 147, 4/25 A Act have been registered against the arrested people,” he said
Many Gujjar activists took to twitter to condemn the incident and demanded strict action against such people to stop these incidents from happening again.
Zahid Parvaz Choudhary, State President of Jammu and Kashmir Gujjar Bakarwal Youth Welfare Committee also took to twitter to express his resentment on this incident.
“Another incident of Mob lynching repeated in Jammu, two Gujjar were badly beaten by RSS goons in Garhote area of Tehsil Balwal of district Jammu, when they were returning back from their field with cattle. As the govt is responsible because no action taken place in past incidents by police.”
Choudhary Irshad Khatana, tribal rights activist, wrote, “people are dying in this pandemic. But Goons of RSS are on their mission to Lynching people on the name of religion, Minority and caste. Now Jammu has become a hub of Mob lynching after Abrogation 370. Lynching of particular sect society i.e, Gujjar Bakerwal community is common.”
Another activist Showkat Shabir Choudhary wrote on twitter, “an unfortunate incident happened in jammu yesterday where a poor muslim tribal was beaten badly. Highly thankful to @JmuKmrPolice for registering FIR against culprits and arresting one of the main culprits. Such incidents are against brotherhood. We demand strict action under the law.”
