Man from Raesi arrested after 35 years of police hunt in cheat case

Srinagar: Police on Monday claimed to have arrested a man after a hunt of thirty-five years in Reasi of Jammu division on Monday.

In a statement, the police said that team of Police Station Arnas arrested absconder Mohd Shafi son of Lala Bakerwal resident Matlote, an wanted criminal accused under section 406, 34 & 224 RPC, after a hunt of long 35 years.

The statement further stated that on 6th of November 1986 Police Station Mahore received a written application from Shivsaran son of Ganga Ram in which the complainant claimed that his sheep which were entrusted to Mohd Shafi for grazing and taking care had been sold by him and others, thus causing criminal breach of trust. Once the matter came to police and investigation started after lodging Case FIR number 128/1986  Dated 06/11/1986 U/S 406, 34 RPC of Police Station Mahore, the accused went underground & was evading arrest after commissioning of offense.

After hectic efforts he was arrested but on 08/01/1987 accused Mohd Shafi escaped from police custody, they said.

Therefore, another FIR no 6/1987 U/S 224 RPC was lodged against him but the accused couldn’t be apprehended as he kept on changing his locations in grazing pastures in dhoks in militancy infested areas of Kashmir, they said.

Meanwhile investigating officer of the case proved offence against the accused challaned both cases the court of law, Mahore on 30/06/1987. Later Mahore court issued two warrants against accused on 17/07/1987 and 29/09/1987 in case FIR no 06/1987 U/S 224 and FIR no. 128/1987 U/S 406, 34 RPC respectively under section 512 CrPC, they said.

Accused kept on evading arrest for the last 35 years by frequently changing his locations in remote areas, they said.

The spokesman while elaborating said that team of Police Station Arnas by putting strenuous efforts with meticulous planning and effective coordination developed a specific input, which led to his arrest from dhoks in Banihal falling under district Ramban and produced in the court of law. Honb’le court released the accused on interim bail for four days on production of a personal surety bond of Rs 50,000.

Senior Superintendent of Police Reasi Sh Shailender Singh has geared up his police team to put the criminals and absconders behind bars so that peace-loving citizens can sleep peacefully. This is the arrest of the Eleventh absconder by Reasi police within last Six weeks, reads the statement.
