Kulgam teacher gets salary five days after son’s suicide

Rs 33 crore released for payment of salaries of 630 teachers

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday released the salary of a teacher whose son died by suicide on May 28.

Official sources said that Director School Education Kashmir Tassaduq Hussain Mir today released Rs 33 crores to chief education officers of Kashmir for payment of withheld salary of 630 teachers, including the father of a boy from Kulgam who died by suicide on May 28.

“The salary of these teachers was pending due to deficiency of documents and verification,” the official said.

In the video shot by the boy before killing himself, he was heard as saying that he was forced to take this extreme step due to financial crises of his family following non-payment of the salary of his father for over two-and-a-half years.

Pertinently, all the teachers whose salary was withheld have blamed a former Director of School Education Kashmir for withholding their wages.

The Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Forum (JKTF) staged a silent protest against the administration for not releasing the salaries of around 149 teachers.

Scores of teachers assembled at Srinagar’s Press Enclave and held a sit-in to press for their demands.

Muhammad Rafiq Rather, Chairman Jammu Kashmir Teachers Forum said that 149 teachers are not getting their salaries due to ‘adverse’ report.

“65 among them are not getting salaries for the alleged militancy-related issue. Although they have got clearances from CID and other security agencies, still their salaries are being withheld. There is no concrete order in this regard as well,” he said.

He added that youth from Kulgam ended his life after his father’s salary was withheld for the last 24 months.

“The government must release the salaries of all the employees so that such incidents are prevented,” he added. (KNO)
