Srinagar: Farmers of several villages in Pulwama and Shopian are suffering as authorities have failed to reconstruct the siphon damaged in the 2014 flood.
The siphon along with the bridge on rivulet Ranbiara got damaged during the 2014 floods at Rakh Village of Pulwama district, however, authorities have constructed an alternative bridge near the spot, but have failed to reconstruct the siphon on which dozens of hectares of land are dependent on watering purposes.
Farmers from Rakh, Zahidbagh, Darbagh, Naina, Batpora, and Watchi area of Pulwama and Shopian district said that due to the absence of siphon, dozens of Kanals of land is still dry and are unable to plant paddy.
They said that a pump shed was installed in the area but due to unscheduled power supply and frequent technical issues in the pump, water isn’t adequate in the area and several farmers are still waiting to water their land for paddy plantation.
They said that the irrigation department is fully aware of the issue but they aren’t serious to solve our issue.
“We have brought this issue to the notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail,” they said.
Locals requested concerned authorities to look into the matter at the earliest so that farmers can irrigate their land and complete plantation.
An official of the irrigation department said that the mega project has been already approved to reconnect two ends of the canals. The official assured that the work on the project will start soon. (KNO)
