Pultizer prize winning journalist, Danish Siddiqie who was killed in Afghanistan on Friday will be buried inside Jamia Millia Islamia University campus in New Delhi, the university public relations officer was quoted as saying by Clarion India.
Ahmad Azeem, the PRO of JMI University said on Sunday afternoon that the administration is in the process of identifying a spot for Siddique’s grave in the campus.
The decision to bury Siddique, an alumni of the Jamia’s journalism department was approved by the vice chancellor Najma Akhtar following a request from the family of the slain photojournalist, Clarion reported.
Siddique family lives in neighbourhood Gaffar Manzil near the university campus in Okhla, New Delhi. His corpse is expected to arrive at Delhi Airport from Kabul around 6PM. Family sources said the Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered after mandatory Isha (night) prayers.
The locals living around the campus Saturday evening held a candle light march at the gates of the varsity to pay tribute to the brave heart who was killed while on duty covering the clashes between Afghan forces and Taliban insurgents in Spin Boldak area of Kandhar, Afghanistan.
Siddique graduated with a degree in Economics from Jamia Millia Islamia. He had a degree in Mass Communication from the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Millia in 2007.
The journalism alumni group of the university condoled his demise in a statement while remembering their colleague who would often visit the centre to interact with young students.
He had covered the Middle East conflict, Hong Kong protests, Nepal earthquake, the Rohingya crisis, Delhi riots as well as the Covid crisis for which he faced the ire of the Hindu nationalists who said he was “defaming” the Modi government.
