Srinagar: Authorities on Monday disallowed the Muharram procession in Srinagar and detained several mourners when they tried to gather for the march.

Eyewitnesses said that in view of the Muharram procession scheduled to be taken out from Srinagar’s Abi Guzar area today, the mourners were disallowed for the procession and several of them were also detained by the armed forces personnel.

On Tuesday morning, the administration had imposed restrictions in Maisuma, Abiguzar, TRC, Dalgate, Budshah bridge, Gowkadal and Kralkhud areas to prevent any march by the Shia mourners.

Pertinently, the JK administration had announced that the Muharram procession will be allowed to carry out this year after 30 years.

However, after the move was questioned by the Shia leaders, the administration stated that concerned Deputy Commissioners will take a call accordingly after reviewing the situation.

Earlier, a group of journalists was physically assaulted by armed forces personnel when they were performing their professional duties at the city’s Jehangir Chowk area.
