On Friday, the Delhi Police detained multiple people outside Assam Bhawan in New Delhi for peacefully protesting against the ‘brutality of Assam Police against the landless Muslims’ in the state’s Darrang district, reported Muslim Mirror.

As per the report, the protesting activists were taken to Mandir Marg Police Station, New Delhi.

The protest was called by a group namely the “Fraternity Movement”. A poster was circulated by the group that read, ”rise in rage against killing of Muslims by uniformed terrorists in Assam”, reported Muslim Mirror.

On Tuesday, policemen in riot gear opened fire on civlians protesting over Assam government’s ‘eviction drive against’ landless Muslim families in Assam’s Sipajhar. The government has been calling then ‘illegal immigrants’.

In a video of the incident that went viral on social media, a photographer identified as Bijay Baniya can be seen jumping over the body of a man seemingly killed by the police in Assam.

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that the policemen “acted in self-defence”. He has ordered a probe – to be headed by a retired High Court judge – into the violence.

Former Congress politician Rahul Gandhi has called the action “State-sponsored fire”. Several other opposition politicians have also condemned the ‘brutality’.
