Gurugram: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Monday agreed to give an urgent listing to a petition seeking contempt action against Haryana officers for their alleged inaction in preventing the disruption of Friday prayer in designated places in Gurugram, reports said.
The petition is filed by former Rajya Sabha MP Mohammad Adeeb. It sought action against the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police of State of Haryana, Maktoob media reported.
Senior Advocate Indira Jaising mentioned the petition before the CJI.
According to the petition, Haryana authorities have failed to comply with the directions issued by the Supreme Court in Tehseen S. Poonawalla Vs Union of India & Ors, in which the Court had issued directions in 2018 to control and prevent the increasing number of hate crimes, including mob violence and lynching.
Following protests by Hindutva groups, the Haryana Government revoked the permissions for nimaz gatherings in Guruguram, the report said.
The petitioner has pointed out that with no strict action being taken against the unruly elements, on 03 December last year, the incidents escalated further and a larger group was present on various sites of Nimaz chanting communally divisive and hateful slogans.
“While presently only certain elements are carrying out a hateful campaign, the inaction of the police in preventing the said persons despite prior information repeatedly given by the present petitioner and others in contempt,” reads the petition filed by Adeeb, who lives in Gurgaon.
According to the petitioner, several complaints have been filed with Commissioner of Police, Gurugram.
Earlier, Gurgaon Muslim Council said it will initiate wider legal moves that would include approaching the high court on different aspects that they have brought up, like inadequate space to offer Nimaz and land not being available to build mosques, the report added.
