Deoband Community Wikimedia members to meet in UP this week

Saharanpur: Deoband Community Wikimedia (DCW) has announced a meet-up of its members this week in Deoband town of Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh.

Several topics related to Wikipedia and Wikimedia would be discussed in the meeting, the spokesman said in a statement.

The Deoband Community Wikimedia is a recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation and consists of several Wikimedia volunteers from India.

It aims and focuses on the documentation of global Deobandi scholarship through Wikipedia and its sister projects.

The group has created biographies of several Kashmiri scholars of the Deobandi thought. Scholars include Mufti FaizulWaheed, Mufti Nazir Ahmad, Maulana Rahmatullah and Dr Rafiq Ahmad Pampori.

DCW founder Aaqib Anjum Aafi said that he would himself take part in the meet-up. He also said that he is trying to get the scholars of the Deobandi movement documented on several other Wikipedias

For this, he is most likely to collaborate with the editors of Arabic Wikipedia, the statement said, adding, other projects and initiatives will be discussed in the meet-up.

A resident of Kashmir, Aafi is a biographical researcher and Jamia Millia Islamia graduate. He has been contributing to the Wikimedia projects for the last three years.

He started the DCW in July 2021 and it was subsequently recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation on 16 January 2022. Aafi is trying to reach Deobandi scholars at a global level, the statement mentioned.

Commenting on the DCW initiative, Maulana Bilal Ali Ansari said, “This initiative is very special to my heart, as it is attempting to fulfill a debt that is owed by many to the great personalities of the Qasimi intellectual and spiritual lineage.”
