46 migrants found dead inside tractor-trailer in Texas

Forty-six migrants have been found dead inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas, news agencies reported citing law enforcement officials briefed on the matter.

46 people were found dead inside the truck, in a presumed migrant smuggling attempt in South Texas, Reuters reported. According to various reports, the truck was found next to railroad tracks in a remote area on the city’s southern outskirts.

San Antonio police is yet to make an official statement on the incident.

Meanwhile, Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said the Mexican consul was en route to the site where dozens of people were found dead in a truck. Ebrard said in a tweet that the victims’ nationalities were still unknown.

“Tragedy in Texas. Reportedly suffocated in trailer box. Consul en route to the point. Condolences to the victims and their families. We don’t know nationalities yet,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Mexican General Consulate in San Antonio said on Twitter that it would provide aid to any Mexicans involved in the incident if there were any. It also said Consul General Ruben Minutti was on the way to the scene.
