Flesh trade racket in Srinagar: SPO appointed to investigate offences of immoral trafficking

Srinagar: In wake of the busting of a flesh trade racket in Bagh-e-Mehtab area of Srinagar on Monday, the district magistrate Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad has issued an order for the appointment of a Special Police Officer for dealing with offence under immoral Traffic Prevention Act 1956 within the territorial jurisdiction of the district.

The order reads, “Whereas, Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar vide his letter No CRB/RDR/11595 dated: 03-4-2023 has requested for the appointment of a Special Police Officer not below the rank of an Inspector of Police for dealing with offences under Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956”.

Accordingly, the DM appointed Inspector Gulshan Akhtar (No 4463/NGO) of DPL Srinagar as Special Police Officer under section 13 (2) of Immoral Traffic Prevention Act 1956 for dealing with offences within the territorial jurisdiction of the district.

The officer is now empowered under the Act to investigate and carry criminal proceedings in all such matters.

Earlier on Tuesday, police said that the house owner where the flesh trade racket was busted has been booked under the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act.

The racket was being run from a rented accommodation in Srinagar’s Bagh-e-Mehtab area. Police had said that two persons running this racket Irshad Ahmad Bhat of Pampore and Mohd Shafi Hajam of Karimabad Pulwama were arrested. Four females, all residents of Srinagar and two customers were detained. A First Information Report was registered under relevant sections of law at Chanpura police station.
