Kangpokpi: In a fresh violence on Tuesday night, nine people were killed amidst incidents of firing and arson in the Aigijang village of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.

This is the largest casualty in a single incident in the continuing incidents of violence in the state in the last few weeks.

Several of those injured have been rushed to Imphal for treatment. Some of those killed in the violence have cut marks on their bodies and multiple bullet injuries, NDTV reported quoting sources.

The incident happened on Tuesday night about 10.30 pm, according to the Imphal East Superintendent of Police.

Aigijang, which is located on the border of these two districts and is part of the Kangpokpi revenue district, is governed by Imphal East. Aigijang is a Kuki village; however, the nine bodies that were found belonged to Meitei men who did not live there, The Indian Express report said. Police claimed that these were “local volunteers”.

Since at least Monday, there have been shootings and other acts of violence in this border region, which has witnessed a huge inflow of Meitei men from adjacent areas to “defend” the Meitei-dominated portions of the border region.

The ethnic clashes began on May 3 between the Meitei people, a majority that lives in the Imphal Valley, and the tribal community from the surrounding hills, including the Kuki and Zo peoples. More than 70 people died in the violence, and hundreds were left wounded.
