Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived in Tehran on Saturday. This was his first trip to Iran following a historic rapprochement after a seven-year rift, Iranian media reported.
Prior to a news conference, the senior Saudi diplomat is scheduled to meet with Iranian officials during his visit, including Tehran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said AFP report.
Saudi media have also reported a planned meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi during Prince Faisal’s first visit to the Islamic republic as foreign minister.
In 2016, Saudi Arabia broke off diplomatic ties with Iran, which is dominated by Shiites, after attacks on its embassies in Tehran and Mashhad amid demonstrations against the murder of Shiite preacher Nimr al-Nimr by Riyadh.
However, in an agreement mediated by China, the two nations decided in March to heal their relations and reopen their respective embassies, which has changed regional relations.
Prince Faisal was anticipated to “take some measures” towards reopening the Saudi diplomatic presence in Tehran during the visit, according to government spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi, who talked to local media.
