Approximately 13,000 residents in the western German city of Duesseldorf have been instructed to temporarily evacuate their homes due to the discovery of a US-made bomb from the Second World War era. Firefighters reported this development on Monday.

The bomb, weighing around one ton and originating from the United States, was located during construction work near the city zoo. Plans were set for the bomb’s defusal to take place overnight, as indicated by the fire brigade.

Even 78 years after the conclusion of the Second World War, remnants of the conflict persist in German cities in the form of unexploded ordnance. These remnants are frequently unearthed at construction sites.

A similar incident took place in 2017 in Frankfurt when a bomb weighing 1.4 tons was discovered, leading to the evacuation of 65,000 individuals.

Additionally, in December 2021, an explosion occurred at a construction site near Munich station involving a Second World War bomb. This incident resulted in injuries to four people and caused disruptions to rail traffic.
