Re-registration process of NGOs: DIC, CID blame each other for delay

Civil secretariat in Srinagar.

Jammu: Despite numerous Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) actively contributing to healthcare, community development, social justice, and education, their efforts face obstacles due to the indifferent attitude of officials in charge at the Directorate of Industries & Commerce (DIC) and the CID Department.

These NGOs, recognised and supported by the government, are impeded by bureaucratic delays in the re-registration process mandated for NGOs in the Union Territory after Jammu and Kashmir was stripped of special status and divided into two UTs.

While over 550 NGOs received notices to undergo re-registration at the DIC department, a significant number still grapple with the process after more than two years, Daily Excelsior reported.

The prolonged delay has caused mental distress for NGO representatives, who are frustrated by the lack of progress despite repeated visits to government offices.

Rajinder Singh, vice-president of an NGO, highlighted the challenges, stating, “We are a non-profit organization, aiding the needy, yet our re-registration at the DIC is stalled without satisfactory responses from officials.”

Assistant Director of DIC, Pankaj Sassan, while speaking to the newspaper acknowledged the delay but attributed it to collaborative efforts involving multiple departments, suggesting NGOs write letters for fresh re-registration or engage directly with the CID Department.

SSP CID, Rajeshwar Singh, newly assuming the position, expressed commitment to expedite the verification process, pledging to address the longstanding issue promptly.
