Three shot dead in Manipur’s Thoubal, curfew reimposed in several districts

Imphal district of Manipur.

Imphal: Three people were reportedly shot dead, and five others sustained injuries in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Monday evening, PTI reported.

Unidentified gunmen, dressed in camouflage, targeted locals in the Lilong Chingjao area. While three people lost their lives instantly, the injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Enraged by the attack, locals set three four-wheelers on fire, with the ownership of these vehicles remaining unclear.

In response to the fresh violence, authorities reimposed curfew in Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts. Manipur has been grappling with heightened tensions since May 3, with over 180 fatalities and numerous injuries stemming from violence. The unrest originated during a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts, protesting against the Meitei community’s call for Scheduled Tribe status.

Meiteis, comprising around 53% of Manipur’s population and residing mainly in the Imphal Valley, clashed with Nagas and Kukis, who make up over 40% and reside in the hill districts.

In a video message, Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the recent violence and urged residents, particularly those in Lilong, to maintain peace.

He assured that the police are actively working to apprehend the assailants, who will face legal consequences. The situation remains tense, emphasising the need for concerted efforts to restore calm and prevent further escalation of violence in the region.
