Poonch: On Wednesday morning, internet services were temporarily suspended in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir.

This action followed the government of India’s decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Paharis, Padari, Koli, and Gadda Brahmins for reservations in the Union Territory (UT).

Deployment of armed forces including local police and CRPF personnel were witnessed in various areas of the two districts.

Earlier, the GoI clarified that this decision would not impact the reservation status of Gujjars and Bakarwals.

In response to the ST status granted to other communities, a protest was staged at Jammu University by Gujjar and Bakarwal students who argued that the decision was unjust to them.

The concerns raised by these communities highlight the complexities surrounding reservation policies and their potential impacts on different sections of the population

“Murder of Constitution, Murder of idea of reservation. Black day for tribal community of Jammu & Kashmir. BJP has passed destruction bill of Gujjar Bakarwal Community by giving ST status to upper castes of J&K,” a Gujjar Bakarwal Youth Welfare Conference J&K spokesperson posted on his X account today.
